March Roars With Band Performances at BHS

Coming up right around the corner following winter break are two amazing performances by the Burlington High School Music Department and the Burlington Public Schools band program. Make sure to mark them on your calendar!

The Burlington High School Music Department will hold its annual Ides of March Concert on Thursday, March 1, 2012, in the cafeteria of the high school (located at the back of the building). The concert will begin at 7:30 pm.

A favorite of many because of its relaxed cabaret atmosphere, the Ides of March Concert will feature the talents of the Burlington High School Chorus and Select Singers under the direction of John Middleton-Cox, and the Burlington High School Concert and Jazz Band, under the baton of Matt Lovell.

The Ides of March Concert is free of charge. Refreshments will be available during the concert. The BHS Cafeteria is handicapped accessible.

The third annual All-Town Band Concert will be held in the gymnasium of Burlington High School on Thursday, March 8 beginning at 7:00 pm.

The concert will include all levels of the Burlington band program, beginning with the 4^th grade and continuing on through high school level. It provides an opportunity for parents to witness the development of the music students and the progression of the program through their public school lives. The band teachers from all schools are instrumental in the planning and also participate in directing the individual groups as well as the combined piece at the end.

The concert is free of charge.

New England Tenors Take Stage at Rogers Center in N Andover tomorrow!

The New England Tenors, a favorite of Burlington audiences for their performances at the Boosters Gala Benefit Concert for the past two years, will be performing tomorrow evening at the Rogers Center for the Arts at Merrimack College.

Burlington High School's John Middleton-Cox (BPS Music Coordinator and BHS music educator) is an integral member of the New England Tenors. Joining the tenors on percussion will be BHS senior Patrick Hanafin.

Holiday Spirit Comes Alive at BHS Holiday Concert this Thursday

The Burlington High School Music Department invites you to enjoy a bit of holiday cheer on Thursday, December 15, 2011, at the annual BHS Holiday Concert. The performance will begin at 7:30 pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center of the high school. Featured on the concert will BHS Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble led by Matt Lovell, and the BHS Chorus and Select Singers led by John Middleton-Cox.

The BHS Holiday Concert promises to be a wonderful evening of music that will bring the warmth of the season to all who attend. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to enjoy this holiday gift of music. Fogelberg Performing Arts Center is handicapped accessible.

The Burlington High School Drama Club is ready to raise the curtain on one of its funniest performances in recent years!

Noises Off opens tonight at 7:30 pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center of Burlington High School, 123 Cambridge Street, Burlington.

A hilarious and raucous look at what really happens backstage in the play within the play, Nothing On, this Burlington High School production will have you laughing in the aisles and talking about sardines and doors for weeks to come.

Cast members of Noises Off are Danielle Schissler, Zaven Ovian, Anthony Cruz, Katrina Gilstrap, Michelle Lee, Chris Coe, Giovanna Fernandes, Jeff Manni and Walker Peterson.

Thanksgiving 2011: Video memories

This past Thursday on a sparkling November morning, the Thanksgiving game was played victoriously by the BHS Red Devils.

Prior to the game the BHS Marching Band accompanied baritone Zaven Ovian by putting down their instruments and performing the American Sign Language (ASL) version of The Star Spangled Banner. The crowd rose to their feet and as the anthem began, you could hear a pin drop at Varsity Field. We wanted to share a clip of the ASL anthem, provided by alumni parent Shirley Fong:

During the half-time show the Marching Band played their hearts out and added a few exciting crowd-pleasing tricks.

And finally, what better way to teach than to show...Mr. Lovell took to the stands with a trumpet and became one of the gang!

There have been many wonderful memories created this year with the BHS Marching Band. Here's to a great year and many, many more to come!

The Fogelberg Performing Arts Center at Burlington HighSchool is poised for what The New York Post has described as the “funniestfarce ever written,” with the performances of Michael Frayn’s Noises Off, onDecember 2 and 3. The fast-paced, door-slamming comedy will be presented by theBurlington High School Drama Club on December 2 and 3 at 7:30 pm.

Noises Off follows a traveling acting company’s struggles to prepare andperform a bedroom farce called Nothing On. The romantic entanglements,general cluelessness, and bad habits of the cast and crew create a catastrophicproduction of the play-within-a-play, which in turn provides for a hilariousexperience for the audience of Noises Off.

Noted for its strong ensemble of comedic players, theBurlington cast is directed by BHS English department faculty member Ann Ford. Cast members includes (in order of appearance):

Thanksgiving: A Final Farewell to Senior Band Members

Seniors from the BHS Color Guard, Marching Band and Dance Squad

This is it...the final game for all seniors in the BHS Marching Band, Color Guard and Dance Squad.

The Burlington High School Red Devils will take on the Lexington Minutemen tomorrow at Varsity Field. Prior to the game the seniors and parents will be recognized for their contribution while members of the band. A bittersweet moment for the parents, the ceremonies will begin at approximately 9:50 with kick-off at 10:15.

If you haven't yet heard, the BHS Marching Band will not play the National Anthem at the game...they will perform the ASL National Anthem. Check out the previous blog entry to find out more details.

BHS Marching Band to perform ASL National Anthem on Thanksgiving

This Thursday morning the Burlington High School MarchingBand, our own dedicated group of student musicians, will astonish one and all duringthe opening ceremonies of the Thanksgiving Day game against Lexington atBurlington’s Varsity Field.

At any given home game, Burlington’s varsity footballgames open with the teams taking the field and baritone soloist Zaven Ovian performingthe National Anthem accompanied by his fellow musicians in this dedicatedmarching organization.

This is not your typical opening and, by now, everyoneknows that the BHS Marching Band is not your typical performing group.

This Thursday during the opening ceremonies of the finalgame of the season and a farewell to all seniors, the Marching Band will takethe field just prior to their performance of the National Anthem, led by seniordrum major Andrew Frost and junior drum major Eddie Gelberg. They will taketheir positions . . . and then at approximately 10:15 am they will forego the instruments they have played all season.

The Burlington High School Marching Band will sign, not sing,the National Anthem!

Burlington High School Marching Band director Matt Lovellcame up with the idea at the beginning of the school year and following apassing mention to the band was delighted to find that members went to theinternet and self-taught the ASL anthem. The students took it to their fellowmusicians who learned it in no time.

To the best of their knowledge, no other musicalorganization has done anything of this kind.

This Thursday morning as spectators in the stands areprepared to rise for the playing of The Star Spangled Banner, they will rise,hear a single voice, and view a sea of words as the members sign in complete reverenceand pride the lyrics to the national anthem of the United States of America.

Just another example of how the learning environment at BHS can have an affect on our students in more ways than we could ever have imagined!

ALL IN A DAY'S WORK: BHS Marching Band performs Veteran's Day and Friday-Night Lights

TheBurlington High School Marching Band will take part in a day of remembrance andperformance as it celebrates Veteran’s Day and the final Friday-Night-Lightsgame of the season at Varsity Field.

Helping tocelebrate the 70^th anniversary of the beginning of the USinvolvement in World War II, the band will participate in the Veteran’s Dayobservance on the town common with the program beginning with the flag raising and "Call to Colors" at 9:00 am. The BHS Marching Band will perform a number of patriotic selections. If there is inclement weather, the ceremony will take place inthe Human Resources Building, 61 Center Street.

In theevening, Burlington hosts the Wilmington Wildcats in a game that will decidethe second place spot in the league. The competition promises to be fierce asboth teams come to the field with a 3-1 small school record in the MiddlesexLeague. The final game will take place athome on Thanksgiving Day at 10:15 am.

The BHSMarching Band will perform during the half-time show and continues to dazzlewith its routines on the field. Don’t miss this final Friday Night Lightshalf-time show and match-up against the Wilmington Wildcats. Game time is 7:00pm.

BHS ALUMNI JOIN NEW ENGLAND TENORS GALA BENEFIT CONCERT AND SILENT AUCTION

In one week the Burlington High School Music Boosters will host their annual Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center of the high school. The event will take place on Saturday, November 5, at 7:30 pm. Doors will open at 6:30 pm for bidding on our exciting silent auction items.

Silent auction items include tickets to the Boston Red Sox, orchestra seats for La Cage Aux Folles, season tickets to all BHS theatrical productions, gift baskets and gift cards for services and eateries in the Burlington area. All proceeds from the concert will go directly to the programs of the Music Boosters which include scholarships, transportation, award banquets and other items requested by music staff that support successful educational experiences and musical performances.

The performers are busily preparing for what promises to be an exeptional night of music and memories. Not only will the New England Tenors be returning after an overwhelmingly popular performance last year but we will also bring back stars of BHS musicals past in revivals of their showstopping songs.

The NEW ENGLAND TENORS will be guest artists for the event following their highly acclaimed concert performance last year. The tenors, JOHN MIDDLETON-COX (Burlington Public School’s own Coordinator of Music), DAMIEN CORCORAN and RAY BAUWENS, will perform musical selections that cross generations and styles, from opera to musical theatre to Irish rock!

Alumni who will return to perform at the Gala Benefit Concert are:

ANGELA RICHARDSON (2004), who is remembered for her larger than life portrayal of Auntie Mame at BHS.A graduate from Eastern Nazarene College in music performance, she is employed bythe Reagle Music Theatre of Boston. Angela has performed with a number of localtheatre companies including Nunsense with the Burlington Players and most recently as Jo in the WellesleyPlayers sold out run of Little Women.

AMANDA POTTS (2004), a graduate of the University of Connecticut and a MMuEd student at GordonCollege. She is remembered at BHS for her roles in Guys and Dolls and Mame. Amanda has recently starred in TheCenter for the Performing Arts (Natick) production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Changeand ACT Andover’s production of Beauty and the Beast. Amanda is theinstrumental music teacher at Francis Wyman Elementary School.

ANDREA GIANGRECO (2009) who recently graduate of Salem State College. She is remembered for herlead roles in the BHS productions of Anything Goes and LesMiserables, and comes back to BHS following a run in the Turtle LanePlayers production of The Rocky Horror Show. Andrea has also played several lead roles with the Pentucket Players of Haverhill.

EVA RAE COSTANZA (2010), who is currently studying musical theatre at Boston Conservatory. Eva, a former youth performer with North Shore Music Theatre, performed lead roles at BHS in Les Mis, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Annie and The Wizard of Oz, as well as the Burlington Educational Summer Theatre production of Annie! She is a costuming assistant with The Costume Room and has worked with Backyard Broadway and Burlington Educational Summer Theatre.

JAMIE COOK (2010), currently a student at Hofstra University in New York. Jamie is bestremembered for her roles in Thorough Modern Millie and TheWizard of Oz, and has been seen in the Burlington Educational Summer Theatre production of Annie. She returns to Burlington following a lead role in Hofstra’sproduction of The New Brain.

There will also be a special performance of a selection from Fiddler on the Roof by TAHLEEN (2005), NISHAN (2008) and ZAVEN OVIAN (2012) with their mother and outgoing Music Boosters member, VANESSA OVIAN. The Ovians have collectively appeared in every musical that has appeared on the BHS stage for the past ten years. They have played lead roles in Mame, Jekyll & Hyde, Les Mis, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Titanic and Beauty and the Beast, and the Burlington Eduational Summer Theatre productions of Annie and Little Shop of Horrors. They have all participated in both the BHS band and chorus programs.Vanessa has an MA in Vocal Performance.

GALA BENEFIT CONCERT AND SILENT AUCTION: New England Tenors in return engagement

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association is pleased to announce that it will hold its annual Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction on Saturday, November 5 at 7:30 pm, in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center of Burlington High School.

Following an overwhelming response to their performance at last year’s event, the Music Boosters have invited The New England Tenors back for a return engagement. The benefit will also showcase Burlington High School alumni in reprise performances from musicals past.

The New England Tenors members John Middleton-Cox, Damien Corcoran and Ray Bauwens, never cease to captivate their audiences with their brilliant cross-generational performances. With combined roots in musical theatre, opera and rock, repertoire includes classics made famous by The Three Tenors, the Irish Tenors, operatic arias, and just the right sprinkling of current and popular favorites.

John Middleton-Cox, tenor, is originally from Northern New York and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Boston Conservatory. As a classical tenor, he has performed a variety of professional roles from Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus to the Duke in Patience, and regards Jordan Hall, the Emerson Majestic and The Old North Church to be among his favorite performance venues. Middleton-Cox is the Coordinator of Music in Burlington, Massachusetts, where he also conducts the high school choruses and produces and directs the spring musical. He is Music Director at North Parish Church in North Andover.

Damien Corcoran, tenor, obtained a Bachelor of Arts in music from Rutgers University where he performed for five years with the Rutgers Opera Workshop. Other favorite performances include those with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops as a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Amato Opera Company in New York City. In addition to a capella performances in restaurants in New Jersey and Massachusetts, Corcoran is the lead man for the Irish-flavored rock band, Demijon Music Clan.

Ray Bauwens, tenor, is well known to audiences not only in New England but also internationally. Some of Mr. Bauwens’ recent performances have included the roles of Cavaradossi in Tosca, Dick Johnson in La Faciulaa del West, Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera, and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. He has appeared with the National Symphony of the Ukraine, the Mexico State Symphony Orchestra, the Handel and Haydn Society, Opera Providence, Connecticut Concert Opera, Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, Boston Civic Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic and during Lila York’s staging of the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Boston Ballet.

The Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction is the most successful fundraiser for the Burlington High School Music Boosters Association. Proceeds from the event will fund scholarships, support award banquets, assist in transportation and fulfill wish-list requests from the music department.

Admission to the Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction is $15 adults, $10 senior citizens and students. Ticket prices include reserved seats at the evening’s performance and festive dessert buffet served during intermission at which time bids may be placed on silent auction items. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Burlington Red Devils vs. Melrose, come rain or come shine!

DUE TO HEAVY RAIN, LIGHTNING AND THUNDER, THE BHS MARCHING BAND WILL NOT BE PLAYING AT THE GAME TONIGHT. SEE THEM NEXT WEEK IN WAKEFIELD...GAME STARTS AT 7 PM.

At the risk of wearing out an age old song, "Rain, rain, go away, come again another day!"

Tonight's match-up between Burlington and Melrose WILL take place rain or shine! We're ready the for Melrose Red Raiders...the band is raring to go after last weekend's performance at the Salem Invitational.

The game is in Burlington at 7:00 pm but it is a home game for Melrose...their field is being worked on so the schedule was a bit confusing.

Don't forget to bring an umbrella, rain jacket and something to sit on that will keep your tush warm and dry!

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SHOW: BHS Marching Band Takes Field in Salem

This is the year of lasts for me.

In what is my first of the lasts I attended my 11th and final Salem Marching Band Invitational in New Hampshire this past weekend as a BHS parent along with 3,000+ of my closest marching band friends and afficionados.

The Salem Marching Band Invitational is a rare experience at which our band students, dance squad and flag corps perform for a stadium filled to the max. Most of the bands over the past years have hailed from New Hampshire, with an occasional band from Maine. Burlington is the only group from Massachusetts to perform in recent years. Reminiscing about the past ten performances in Salem, I’d like to share some fond memories and observations.

• Size never counts! There have been marching bands as diminutive as 30 and as gargantuan as 350 members. No matter the size, each and every group has worked its hardest to come to this moment in time where their performance holds the attention of every musician and spectator. These bands are always fantastic!

• Why can’t we be friends? It doesn’t matter who is seated next to you, every parent shares in the joy of the next, cheering and whooping it up for every marching ensemble. It is quite a unique experience, one of which (and I'm quite sure about this) our own band members are unaware. We point out our own students, talk about previous years and, well, be just who we are . . . proud parents!

• R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Aretha may never know how much this word has meant to the musicians who take the field. Marching routines are always performed with nary a movement or noise in the stands. In fact, I remember being a bit startled at this during the first year I had attended.

• Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! How true! Those of us who have attended a few of the Salem events have noticed that the innovative style of the BHS band has returned to the Invitational in subsequent years.

• The Show Must Go On! Sometimes there are near disasters. I will never forget the year we had a mishap with transportation, necessitating students, instruments, hats and plumes to cram into cars for the trip! My drive up to Salem included passing cars crammed with red and white, with brass instruments filling the voids!

• Instruments Abound! For a few years we have seen extended percussion ensembles on the field and sideline of the Salem Invitational, hauled in on large rolling barges! But it’s pretty safe to say that Burlington has become the innovator once again by introducing a full section of electric guitars, powered by a high-voltage car battery. That’ll be picked up next year!

• Neither rain, nor sleet nor . . . ! Still fresh in my memory was the nearly ill-fated invitational when the skies opened up prior to the event and it had to be moved into the gymnasium of Salem High School. Never fear. The BHS band hastily revamped its marching routine in the hallway just prior to their entrance and dazzled everyone.

• Dancin', Dancin', DANCIN'! They’re a dancing machine! As the years have passed, dancing moves have crept into marching band routines, dipping and swaying to the music, and I'm quite certain BHS had a lot to do with that! Adding a special pizzazz where no other groups could, the BHS Dance Squad has always been the only one of its kind and spectators throughout the stands are always impressed! This years’ rolling line of splits were greeted enthusiastically with cheers from the crowd!

• BHS Flags: The Fabric of Our Lives! The BHS Flag Corps has always provided flash and backdrop with their twirling athleticism on the field. Snapping and twirling with the rhythms on the field, their colorful displays are the accessory to the music, like the loveliest of jewelry on a beautiful garment.

• Something to aspire to. There is no question that our marching band students have been part of a remarkable event at the Salem Invitational. Their participation has always given them an opportunity to see what and how other schools are performing. Not only have they seen peers from other schools, they have also been given an opportunity to see how the colleges perform when the UMass Lowell and the University of New Hampshire alternate performance years.

This evening at precisely 6:00 pm the Salem (NH) Marching Band Invitational will commence, a much anticipated event for all participating bands. The Burlington High School Marching Band will take the field as the fourth band on the program, with an estimated time in the 6:45-7:00 range.

The Salem Invitational has been a much anticipated favorite for years, giving our students the opportunity to see what and how other marching bands are performing, thus nurturing the creativity of every member. From the smallest groups of perhaps 30 members to the largest of over 300, it is a lovefest for officiandos and an evening of pure talent, innovation and entertainment for all.

A Decade of Remembrance

As members of the Burlington High School music program joined the local community this morning on the common to commemorate September 11 during “A Decade of Remembrance,” we were filled with pride for our community, coming together with a show of love and support for the families of the innocent victims near and far who lost their lives, as well as our local first responders and troops who still serve and protect.

Community events like this provide an opportunity to collectively share in the moment of remembrance. As we stood under a crystalline sky early this morning, we did just that, calling back the memories we had of that day 10 years ago. It was an opportunity to “never forget” by relating our own personal stories of where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news.

Music brings special meaning to events such as this by providing the opportunity to reflect on the moment, much the same as it does in worship. Punctuating the prayers and speeches during today’s event were musical performances by the Liberty Belle Chorus, Stuart Highland Pipe Band and our own members of the BHS Marching Band Drum Line and first trumpet section.

The melancholy melodies of the bagpipes and drum as they drew near, the steady beat of the BHS Drum Line as it processed and recessed leading honor guards from the armed forces and our local police and fire departments, the singular voice of “Taps” delivered by members of the BHS trumpet section, and the voices that sang in tribute to our country and troops had a profound effect on all those present this morning.

The BHS Music Boosters and the entire high school community can be proud of our young musicians and their director Matt Lovell. Their service at events like this combined with their musicianship, honor and reverence for the day is an extraordinary experience that stretches far beyond the classroom.

The lyrics of our national anthem rang ever-so-poignantly today as the flag was raised to half-staff:

Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

We will never forget.

It's hard to believe that the football season at BHS is once again upon us. Following some hot summer days of marching band camp, the BHS Marching Band will take to the field for their first half-time show of the season at Billerica.

The game on Friday will take place at the Marshall Middle School, 15 Floyd S. From Burlington drive approximately 6.5 miles north on Cambridge Street (becomes Boston Road in Billerica. Turn right on Route 129, Floyd Street.

This is an age old rivalry so prepare to arrive early! The game starts at 7:00 pm. The bus for marching members departs at 6 so students need to arrive early to change into uniform and pack the bus.

Middleton-Cox honors 9/11 victims in Shanksville, at Pentagon and Times Square

This Sunday as all Americans remember the tragedy of 9/11, the World Memorial Patriot Flag project will continue on its mission to travel to 50 states in 50 weeks crossing the country and travelling nearly ninety thousand miles honoring the fallen.

Transporting its 30 x 56 foot flag to honor the first and second responders, 9/11 families and the fallen of the attacks on America, the Patriot Flag will make its Ten Year Anniversary stops at the sites that have become a part of that tragic day.

Travelling with the Patriot Flag to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, The Pentagon and Times Square will be local musician and music educator John Middleton-Cox of North Andover, Massachusetts, a gifted tenor who has accepted the invitation to perform “The Star Spangled Banner” as the flag is raised at these sites.

Middleton-Cox has already felt the humility and pride that go with a performance of this type, having travelled alongside the Patriot Flag to five other venues across New England.

In his own words, Middleton-Cox explains the significance of his performance.

I don't need the attention, it is more a point of pride. I am honored to just be among these people, namely retired FDNY Lieutenant Joe Torrillo who survived both towers of the World Trade Center falling on him. As a survivor he has dedicated his life to lifting up the memory and the sacrifice these brave men and women gave. It is a way to draw attention to the first responders, to say we are paying attention and we remember; the ones who gave their lives, the families they left behind, and the current emergency teams serving today. Thank you for risking your lives for our safety.

Middleton-Cox has been with Burlington Public Schools as a music educator and the Coordinator of Music since the fall of 2000. As a performer he has taken the stage as the leading man in operas and musical theatre. He serves as music director and is a member of the trio, The New England Tenors, and is Music Director for the North Parish Church in North Andover.

A man who has performed in concert halls and dinner theatres, his performances this Sunday will be the most humbling of his entire career. A solitary voice in a lonely field in Pennsylvania, at the headquarters for this country’s Department of Defense and at the “crossroads of the world” in New York City, Middleton-Cox will perform a capella to honor all Americans, resting on the final and profound phrase, “Oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave,” as the flag, a symbol of pride, unity and resolve, is raised high.

Ovian, Parker and Cook collaborate on staging

Theinaugural event for Burlington Center for the Arts will take place onFriday, August 19 with the production of Jason Robert Brown’s award winning musical drama, The Last Five Years, a remarkable work and favorite from contemporary musical theatre. The story follows an ambitious andheadstrong writer, and an aspiring but not so successful actress through their relationship in achronological/counter-chronological narration that offers a level of depth tothis painfully sad and, at times, hilariously silly, piece of award-winningtheatre.

Thetwo-person cast stars Zaven Ovian and Jamie Cook, both by-products of Burlington High School musical theatre productions. Cook graduated from BHSin 2009 and is currently studying at Hofstra University in New York. Ovian will be enteringhis senior year at Burlington High School with his sights set on New York City. Both actors have a number of impressive credits and possess a charismatic stage presence.

The directing team features Brad Jensen (BHS 2008) and Kevin Parker (BHS 2010).

BurlingtonCenter for the Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to the developmentof arts in Burlington. Burlington Educational Summer Theatre (BEST), a program of the Burlington Public Schools, returns to the stage of the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center for its third summer season with performances of Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka Jr.“ on July 23 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm.

Based on Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world famous candy man and his quest to find an heir, the BEST production features more than 60 students from Burlington schools ranging in age from seven to thirteen. Adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse and Timothy A. McDonald, the memorable score features songs from the original movie, including “The Candy Man,” “Pure Imagination,” “Oompa Loompa” and “I Want It Now” by Academy and Grammy award winning composers Bricusse and Anthony Newley.

Burlington Educational Summer Theatre offers a professionally produced educational theatre experience for students. The program is under the guidance of BEST Executive Director John Middleton-Cox, a highly regarded theatre professional and music educator in the Burlington Public Schools.

Returning to BEST this year are Jeanne Coroniti as Artistic and Music Director and Leanne Reardon as Choreographer, along with professional set designer Peter Waldron and award-winning costume designer Maureen Krebs. Joining them will be Beth Pendery as Production Director, Jill Keaney as Assistant Choreographer, Kevin Parker as Company Manager and Sammie Ellis as Production Assistant. BEST staff members also include a number of high school students and graduates, all veterans of Burlington High School productions, in roles as crew members and counselors, providing a unique mentoring opportunity for all the young students.

Due to an overwhelming response for its summer theatre program Burlington Public Schools has also created a brand new program running in tandem with the theatre production. The BEST Workshop provides an opportunity for its students to focus on performance skills that encourage self-esteem while building self-confidence. Directing the workshop is Endicott College educator and composer/performer Nanette Perrotte. Students are taught voice, acting and dance skills, monologue and audition prep and imagination skills. The workshop students will showcase their new skills in an exciting final performance on July 15 at 1:00 pm.

The World School, Schools Supporting Schools: BHS Students Perform Benefit Concert For Humanitarian Trip

The World School, Schools Supporting Schools, a local student-run aid organization, is pleased to announce a fundraising Talent Show to benefit their planned humanitarian aid trip to Mexico and Belize for two weeks this summer. The performance will take place at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 15, 2011, in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center of Burlington High School.

The benefit performance will feature Burlington High School students who will donate their time and talents in vocal, dance, improv and rock band performances. Performers include Face the World, Emerson, Eric Leva, Julianne Fitzgerald, Katie Pustizzi, Patrick Hanafin, Theo Brierley, Samantha Goober, Zaven Ovian, the Burlington High School Idle Hands Improv and the SDC Dancers.

The World School is a student-run service group that was created in 2008 when three local area students brainstormed following mission trips to Chuburna, Mexico. Appalled by the Chuburna facilities and the conditions the children faced on a daily basis, they came to the realization that the foundation to helping the impoverished on a long-term basis lies in education, and the best way to help a school was through a school.

Adopting the old proverb, “Give a man a fish, he eats for a night, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime,” the young students travelled to a school in the Yucatanian fishing village to improve its appalling conditions by refurbishing classrooms, setting up a library and providing two generously donated laptop computers. That school, La Escuela Primera 373 Salvador Alvarado, became the pilot school for this dedicated group of young American students. This year's students who will make the journey are Jenna Frank, Cameron Frank, Christyl Skelton, Stephen Jefferson and Sarah McAnespie.

Barely even friends...Then somebody bends...Unexpectedly

Burlington High School’s production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” opens this Friday and it will have just as much excitement and buzz in the air as a Broadway opening. The production is filled with fabulous sets, costumes bursting with creativity and color, a full professional orchestra and a huge cast of tremendously talented kids who have spent hours in rehearsal to bring this show to life!

It's safe to say that this is one for the books as we are breaking records with each day that passes. Can you believe that there are over 120 students in the cast and crew and over 20 parent volunteers and staff members who are providing support behind the scenes?

Ticket sales are ahead of any show ever produced at BHS, resulting in the addition of a sixth performance. In just a few short years we’ve stepped it up so our total audience capacity will now be over 4800! It's pretty safe to say that the BHS spring musical is the “social event of the year!”

Finally, this production will include some special surprises that will break through the imaginary fourth wall of the stage without using one ounce of technology! It is a production that will go down in Burlington High School history!

All-Town Band Concert: Oh What A Night!

What a fabulous night we had on Thursday, March 10, when every band student in the Burlington Public Schools took part in the 2nd Annual All-Town Band Concert, a concert featuring students in combined performances by grade level from the elementary schools (Fox Hill, Francis Wyman, Pine Glen and Memorial), Marshall Simonds Middle School and Burlington High School.

The event was held in the gymnasuim at BHS, the only facility in the district large enough to hold over 1400 people, including over 400 student performers and well over 1,000 in the bleachers..

Spearheaded by BHS' Matt Lovell as a view of the development of our students and the progression of the program through their public school lives, the music teachers and directors from all schools were instrumental in the planning and also participated in directing the individual groups as well as the combined piece at the end.

The program featured the Combined Fourth Grade Bands, directed by Mark Napierkowski and Lindsey Peabody, in "Mary Ann," "Shoo Fly," "Donkey Round" and "Surprise Symphony" (arranged by O'Reilly and Williams). The Combined Fifth Grade Bands, directed by Mark Napierkowski and Lindsey Peabody, performed "Ayre and Dance" by Bruce Pearson, and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by Weiss, Peretti, Creatore (arranged by Story).

Marshall Simonds Middle School was represented by the Concert Band, directed by Amanda Potts, in "La Rajouissance" by G.F. Handel (arranged by Mark Williams) and "When I'm Sixty-Four" by Lennon and McCartney (arranged by Eric Osterling). The MSMS Symphonic Band, directed by Jeffrey Bolduc, played highlights from "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory" by Bricusse and Newley (arranged by Robert Longfield), and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" by J.P. Sousa (arranged by Andrew Balent).

To complete the individual band performances, the BHS Concert Band, directed by Matt Lovell, performed "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" by Stevie Wonder (arranged by Jay Bocook), and "Something" by George Harrison (arranged by Richard Saucedo).

Finally, the evening ended with the combined bands performing "Ode to Joy," by Ludwig von Beethoven (arranged by Jeffrey Bolduc). The performance was a special treat for everyone as it included all grades in performance with all the directors leading the piece in tandem. A spectacular finale, indeed!

BHS Hosts 2nd annual All-Town Band Concert this Thursday

Burlington High School will be the host for the All-Town Band Concert this Thursday in the high school gymnasium. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm.

The performance will feature the entire instrumental music program of the Burlington Public Schools featuring fourth and fifth graders from all elementary school band programs as well as the middle and high school bands. The second annual concert of this type in Burlington, it has been anticipated by parents, students and our music educators as a vehicle for instruction as well as an accomplishment to be long remembered.

Success comes in threes! Fundraising for Select Singers

The BHS Music Boosters are proud to announce that the members of the Select Singers had some grand success this past week in raising funds for their upcoming trip to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The first of these fundraisers was "The Best Night Ever," a casual showcase of the Select Singers in solo and ensemble pieces. The students ran the show including the selections, the rehearsing, the hosting, you name it. Thanks to the lens of Shirley Fong, here are a few photos that will give you an idea of how wonderful the evening was.

The second of the three fundraisers was Youth Movie Night, held on Saturday between 6 and 9 pm. Parents of Burlington children from ages 5-13 were given an opportunity to drop their kids off for a babysitting night while they had time to themselves...held just before Valentines Day for that special night out! The kids played games, won prizes, and watched Disney's "Toy Story 3."

Finally, the third fundraiser was sponsored by Mike Fay and the New England Tenors during their dinner show at Ashworth by the Sea at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. A special friend and supporter of Burlington music, Fay provided another fundraising opportunity by appealing to their packed audience on Sunday evening to make a donation to the Select Singers. This unexpected and generous opportunity has boosted our fundraising endeavors tremendously.

Select Singers present THE BEST NIGHT EVER

The Burlington High School Select Singers will present “The Best Night Ever,” a benefit concert to raise funds for their trip to New York City where they will perform at Carnegie Hall in the spring. The concert will take place at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, February 9 in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center of the high school located at 123 Cambridge Street, Burlington.

“The Best Night Ever” is being prepared entirely by the student themselves and will showcase them in solo and ensemble performances, with director John Middleton-Cox leading the choral pieces. It is one of several activities that the BHS Music Boosters Association are sponsoring to help the Select Singers raise the necessary funds for their trip to perform at Carnegie Hall on May 1, 2011. Ticket sales from the concert will go directly to the travel accounts for each student participating in the performance at Carnegie Hall.

Following three days of rigorous rehearsals in New York, the Select Singers will participate in the Manhattan Concert Productions Octavo Series when they take the stage at Carnegie Hall. Long known as one of the world’s most beloved concert stages, Carnegie Hall is best known for acoustics that have made it a favorite of audiences and performers alike since 1891. For the members of the Burlington High School Select Singers, it will no doubt be the most memorable musical experience of their lives.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND: Toy Story 3 plays BHS

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association will host a Youth Movie Night for all Burlington boys and girls ages 5-13, on Saturday, February 12, 2011. Held in the Fogelberg Auditorium of the high school from 6-9 pm, the movie presentation will be “Toy Story 3.” the 3D computer animated film by Pixar/Disney featuring everyone’s favorite toys Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their friends!

Created as a fundraising event for the BHS Select Singers’ trip to perform at Carnegie Hall in the spring,Youth Movie Night gives parents a special opportunity to enjoy an evening out to celebrate Valentine’s Day, go shopping or just spend some quiet time while their children have a chance to watch a great movie with friends. Youth Movie Night will also give the youngsters an opportunity to enjoy fun games and prizes.

Parents and children will be required to check in upon arrival and check out upon departure and children will be supervised at all times. Babysitters are provided by members of the BHS Select Singers with parent chaperones from the BHS Music Boosters Association.

The cost of admission for Youth Movie Night is $10 per child with a $20 maximum per family if purchased prior to that evening; $12 per child with a $24 maximum per family if purchased at the door. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase during the evening.

Registration forms will be sent home with elementary school children or may be obtained from any member of the Select Singers. BHS SELECT SINGERS: Start Spreading the News, They're Singing in May!

With great excitement the Burlington High School Music Department has announced that it has accepted an invitation for the Burlington High School Select Singers to perform in the Octavo Series of Manhattan Concert Productions at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert will take place on the Ronald O. Perelman Stage of the Stern Auditorium at 8:30 pm on May 1, 2011.

The Octavo Series is designed for qualified high school singers to collaborate on 6 or 7 varied shorter works under the direction of nationally recognized guest conductor, Allen Hightower of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Upon their arrival in Manhattan, they will participate in several hours of rehearsal over the course of three days which will culminate in their performance on Sunday evening and will perform with students from four other choral groups.

The BHS Select Singers is an ensemble of twenty Burlington High School students ranging in age from 15 to 18, chosen by audition by director John Middleton-Cox. Their repertoire includes a variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz and show tunes. Daily rehearsals during scheduled class time provide the singers with the opportunity to practice their skills and perform pieces that are both musically and artistically challenging.

Carnegie Hall is a venue that has long been the premier classical music performance space in the United States since its opening in 1891. Once on stage, the BHS students will look out on five levels of seating that accommodates seating for 2,804.The auditorium’s acoustics have made it a favorite of audiences and performers alike. “It has been said that the hall itself is an instrument,” said the late violin virtuoso Isaac Stern. “It takes what you do and makes it larger than life.”

Fundraising for the Select Singers trip to New York City is currently underway. On February 9 the Select Singers will perform in “The Best Night Ever, a showcase benefit for Carnegie.” The concert will begin at 7:30 pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center and will include solo and ensemble selections. Burlington High School invites you to be our guest this spring as it presents the most heart-warming story ever told, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Performances will take place on March 25, 26, April 1 and 2 at 7:30, and April 3 at 2:00 pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center.

Based on the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast is the story of Belle, a beautiful young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, a handsome young prince who was transformed into a hideous beast by an enchantress. In a race against time, the Beast can only be returned to his former self through the power of his own love, for if he can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end. If not, he and his entire castle will be doomed for all eternity.

Beauty and the Beast is filled with some of the most beloved songs from Disney repertoire, with music and lyrics by Alan Menkin, Tim Rice and the late Howard Ashman. From the Academy Award-winning score, songs include “Beauty and the Beast,” “Be Our Guest” and “Belle” and are joined by new favorites including “Is This Home” and “If I Can’t Love Her.” The production is filled with all the enchantment, wonder and surprise that made it an international sensation!

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association are once again partnering with Broadway Across America and its EventUsher service in a fundraiser that is offering tickets for Disney’s National Touring Company performance of “Mary Poppins” at the Boston Opera House. The performance will take place at 7:30 pm on February 23, 2011, falling during Burlington Public Schools’ winter break.

Ticket prices are $50 for balcony seats and $90 for orchestra seats. A portion of the ticket price will go to the programs of the BHS Music Boosters Association.

Burlington High School is pleased to present one of the most beloved classics of all times, “It’s A Wonderful Life,” on stage at the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center this holiday season. Performances will take place on Saturday, December 4 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 5 at 2:00 pm.

Adapted by James W Rodgers from the Frank Capra film starring James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, “It’s a Wonderful Life” is the story of love and redemption, the story of George Bailey, a young man who seems to have the perfect life: a loving wife, four children and his own business. Then, on Christmas Eve, overwhelming troubles come crashing down on him and he contemplates suicide, convinced that everyone would be better off if he'd never lived. At the last moment his guardian angel, Clarence, appears to show George just how the world would be without him. George is convinced and Clarence returns him to the world for a happy ending that has melted hearts for generations. Playing the lead role of George Bailey is Zaven Ovian with Emily Murgo as Mary Hatch and Stuart Gelin as Clarence Odbody.

Today is Veteran's Day. The Burlington High School Marching Band will participate in the annual commemoration at the town common planned and coordinated by the Veteran's Affairs office here in town.

Every year this event attracts not just veterans but a large group of patriots, Americans whose family members have served their country over the past many decades and their supporters.

We salute each and every one of them. Your service to our country and the freedom we enjoy is recognized and truly appreciated.

The BHS Marching Band, Select Singers and Chorus also participated in the all-school assembly yesterday to commemorate Veteran's Day.

"SHARE THE JOY": BHS Select Singers Join 2,000 In Yuletide Premiere

The BHS Select Singers, conducted by John Middleton-Cox, will sing the world premiere of a new holiday song at Lord & Taylor in the Burlington Mall, Monday, November 15, at 5:30 pm celebrating the eagerly anticipated annual unveiling of the holiday windows at Lord & Taylor’s flagship store in New York City.

With the Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ and almost 2,000 choristers at most of Lord & Taylor’s 46 locations in nine states, the Select Singers will sing a program of yuletide favorites highlighted by “Share the Joy,” written just for this occasion by founder and artistic director of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ Francisco J. Núñez and composer Jim Papoulis.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ extended the invitation to all of the choruses in the spirit of the season to show how the power of song can bring people of all kinds together through music.

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association would like to thank both the local and high school communities for supporting the Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction, featuring The New England Tenors and BHS Chorus and Select Singers. Saturday evening was a magical night for all who were in attendance. Our enthusiastic audience spanned every generation and the spirited and rousing ovations were an overwhelming tribute to the on-stage talent and the event!

Our sincere thanks go out to all who made this a night to remember including The New England Tenors and the brilliant voices of John Middleton-Cox, Ray Bauwens and Damien Corcoran, Alan Freedman on piano, Burlington Schools music teacher Jennifer Rzasa on Violin, and BHS music student Patrick Hanafin on percussion. WELCOME HOME: Varsity Field Reopens with BHS Red Devils vs. Wakefield Warriors

The Burlington High School Red Devils have been dying to play the Wakefield Warriors on Friday, November 5 in a home game in Burlington.

Why Wakefield, you may ask?

Because November 5th will be the first game on Burlington High School's NEW VARSITY FIELD!!! Since the beginning of school our athletic field and its surrounding area have been torn up while the school has replaced the deteriorating and unsafe bleachers on both home and visitor sides and installed a new turf field. And guess what! We now have the same turf that is used at Gillette Stadium. We don't fool around!

Beginning at 6:25 pm, there will be a special Opening Ceremony for the new facility with Mr. Field as Master of Ceremonies. All town officials will be present.

Following that there will also be a special Senior Recognition Ceremony beginning at approximately 6:45. Seniors from the Marching Band, Dance Squad, Color Guard, football team and cheerleading squad will be introduced with their parents/guardians and take the field in recognition of their achievements at BHS. Athletes from other fall sports will also be acknowledged.

So...fair warning...arrive a bit early if you would like to park close, choose a great viewing spot on the new bleachers and revel in the excitement of our new VARSITY FIELD!

With all that has been published about The Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction featuring The New England Tenors, we thought the only thing left to do is provide a tease of what you can look forward to!

This clip of The New England Tenors was recorded by Alan McRae during their recent performance at Ashworth By The Sea in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Tenors John Middleton-Cox (yes, Burlington's own), Damien Corcoran and Ray Bauwens, accompanied by Alan Freedman on piano, will be joined on Saturday evening by the Burlington High School Chorus and Select Singers, presenting a variety of genres that will please everyone in the audience!

So who is this????

This fall has swallowed up every moment of time for the marching band members and their families like a big, ugly monster on Halloween.

From Band Camp that occupied their final two weeks of summer to after school practices and sectionals, the Salem Invitational and football fields that are foreign territory to all, it has been a packed schedule.

Now it's time for more fun!!! This Sunday the BHS Marching Band will participate in the Woburn Lions Club Halloween Parade on Sunday, October 31. YES...IT IS ON HALLOWEEN!!!

The parade starts at 1pm and runs down Main Street, Woburn with the start at the Woburn Movie Theater. Our kids usually go all out and dress in some sort of Halloween get-up over their marching band uniforms... it's a great day for them!

The annual Halloween Parade has not only been a favorite activity of an estimated 80,000 spectators of all ages every year but provides an opportunity for the Lion’s Club to collect donations along the parade route for eye research. Featuring nearly 30 bands and marching units, more than 100 floats and with over 5,000 participants in the parade, it is a great take on a Sunday afternoon.

Come out and cheer them along! Don't forget your costume!!!

The Burlington High School Music Boosters' Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction is just over a week away. Our guest performers this year are The New England Tenors who are fresh off their triumphant sold-out premiere performance at the Ashworth By The Sea in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Jump On It: BHS Marching Red Devils Celebrate Another Football Win in Style!

As each week passes and the wins keep coming for the Burlington Red Devils, the BHS Marching Band and its groupies seem to get, shall we say, zanier!!!

Although the temperatures last night were probably somewhere around 38 degrees, it didn't stop a group of VERY ENTHUSIASTIC moms, dance squad members and even percussionist (yes, they do have rhythm!) from celebrating with what is now known as "The Mommy Dance," aka, "Jump On It" by the Sugar Hill Gang!

Eyes With Pride: Guest Post Praises BHS Marching Band

We're really not bragging...we just wanted to share a "Letter to the Editor" that recently appeared in the newspaper regarding the professionalism and respect our Marching Band students have when faced with students from other schools (both the good and not so good schools).

Dear Editor:

I attended the Burlington High School football game recently when we played against Woburn. I’m a proud marching band parent of a sophomore and two freshmen. Many years ago I was in the marching band so I do remember the intense moments when one town played against a “border” town. Did I mention INTENSE?

Well, some things never change …As our band started marching into the stands, the fans from the opposing team started dropping “f” bombs and “flipping the bird” at our band…. I have NEVER seen anything that DISRESPECTFUL in my life!

Our Burlington High School Marching band showed so much CLASS during this episode, I can’t even begin to tell you. They ignored the swearing, the hand gestures and everything else these “children” endured on them! I can’t think of a prouder moment for me as a parent to see our entire BHS Marching band stand tall, heads held high and not flinch through it all.

It’s amazing to me how a week prior to this game , we played against Belmont and how respectful both the Belmont fans were to us and our Marching band. “You’re band is fabulous, you’re band is awesome” were just a few comments made to me as I sat among these people in the stands. What a difference a week makes!

The level of maturity this band exhibits is done by great parenting on all our parts, but some credit has to go to our wonderful Band Director, Mr. Matt Lovell. He has molded this band, color guard and dance squad to be absolutely fabulous both on the field and in the stands.

They are all awesome young adults and we, as a town, should be proud of them all. If you have never seen them perform, you should attend one of these football games. When the band was in Florida this past April, marching down Main St. at Disney World, a Disney Park Usher told a BHS band parent, “I have worked a long time at this park and seen a lot of bands….This Burlington High School Marching band is the BEST band I have seen thus far!” Now combine that with our GREAT Football team this year, and you can’t go wrong for a great night out! Enough said!

So my “Shout” in this letter goes out to you, BHS marching band, the color guard, and the dance squad… Those TWO weeks of Band camp, EVERY DAY, for 6 HOURS a day, in the hottest summer month of August…the band class you take every day during school as part of your class schedule… the after school practices you attend for 1-2 hours, does not go unnoticed in my eyes or in the eyes of all your parents.

You all have worked so hard and it shows through and through. It’s just too bad that when you are the “away” team, you are sometimes subjected to what you saw and heard that Friday night….and I for one am sorry you had to deal with that and unfortunately, as you all know, will probably deal with again!

You always show Class, Dignity & Respect. We are proud at how you conducted yourself at that game and will continue to be proud of you. Never fall to another town’s level…Hold your head up high like you always do!

“Eyes with Pride” is the band’s motto and you can see that in every band member’s eyes. You can also see it in my eyes when I look at every member of this GREAT group of kids.

Nice job guys….You make the town of Burlington PROUD!!! Continue to do so!

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association is thrilled to present its third annual Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction on Saturday, November 6 at 7:30 pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center.

This year’s event will feature The New England Tenors, a trio of professional musicians who bring years of performing a broad variety of musical genres to the stage like no other tenor group.

Enjoy the brilliant sounds of Damien Corcoran, John Middleton-Cox and Ray Bauwens as they present classic songs made famous by The Three Tenors and The Irish Tenors, inspirational selections including “You Raise Me Up,” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” as well as solos and duets from Broadway’s best-loved musicals. The wheels on the bus go round and round as the BHS Marching Band arrives at destination Salem. Three buses carried the band to the event, with snacks for the students provided by Hospitality Chair Shirley Fong.

There is no way to adequately describe the masses of marching band musicians at the Salem Invitational, but the following pictures are an attempt. That's Burlington in the front, seated on bleachers on the field. In order to provide enough seating for spectators, the bands were placed on the field, as in our case, and on the visitors side.

The parent volunteers from the BHS Music Boosters Association have been a tremendous help in moving our equipment on and off the field. Joining them for this year's Salem Invitation are alumni Eric Leva, Carolyn Kelly, Kevin Parker, Erica Dooley (Asst. Dance Coach), Alex Meier and Marissa diGregorio and Chelsea Rose.

The Burlington High School Marching Band will take the field tomorrow at the Salem (NH) Marching Band Invitational in a performance that promises to knock em dead!

The Salem Invitational has been a favorite for years. For our student musicians it gives them the opportunity to see what and how other marching bands are performing. As Matt Lovell has stated on numerous occasions, it nurtures the creativity of everyone! From the smallest groups of perhaps 30 members to the largest of over 300, it is a lovefest of musicians and appreciation for the genre.

The Salem Invitational begins at 6:30 pm and will take place at Salem High School, Salem, NH (directions are posted ont he right sidebar). This year the BHS Marching Band will perform following intermission (rumor is it that we're #10 on the roster).

WORD OF WARNING: Dress warmly. Hats, gloves, blankets, bench warmers, hand and foot warmers, you know the drill! The cold settles in pretty quickly! Also, food concessions are available and in past years souvenirs (t-shirts, etc) have also been available for purchase.

PS: This event is hosted by the music boosters club of Salem High School. The coordination for this event is absolutely mind-boggling!

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Burlington faces Woburn in age-old rivalry!

The Burlington High School Red Devils face off against the Woburn Tanners this Friday evening at 7:00 pm, Woburn High School, 88 Montvale Ave.

This will be the last half-time show for the BHS Marching Band just prior to its much-anticipated performance at the Salem (NH) Marching Band Invitational on Saturday evening. Despite the inclement weather during the first half of the week, the sections have been furiously preparing for the events, and the level of perfection they have reached will BLOW YOU AWAY!!! As a long-term DisneyWorld employee stated during last year's performance in the Magic Kingdom, this is the best band you'll ever see!

There has been a lot of chatter on Facebook events pages about the Burlington-Woburn rivalry that has the Music Boosters hoping parents will all come out and support our school and our kids! By the way, this is a home game for Woburn so the band will be sitting towards the end of the stands.

Come on out this week for Friday Night Lights! And arrive early...according to the Facebook page there are well over 500 kids who plan to be in attendance...parking spaces will be at a premium!

Dear BHS musicians, families and friends:

The BHS Music Boosters Association would like to remind all of our student musicians to be safe when they drive.

Many of you drive to and from school during football season, rehearsals for various performances and other activities.

Please remember to put the phones away while driving. Use your electronic devices safely and work out a plan to let your parents and others know where you are and when you will be leaving so you are not tempted to pick up your phone or device while driving. And insist that your friends do the same.

The Safe Driving Act states "No person under 18 years of age shall use a mobile telephone, hands-free mobile telephone or mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle on any public way. For the purposes of this section, a junior operator shall not be considered to be operating a motor vehicle if the vehicle is stationary and not located in a part of the public way intended for travel." THE NEW ENGLAND TENORS To Rock Town Meeting This Monday

As many of you already may have heard, The New England Tenors will be the featured performers along with the BHS Chorus and Select Singers at this year's BHS Music Boosters Association Gala Benefit Concert and Silent Auction on November 6 in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center (check out the poster on the sidebar of the blog).

The New England Tenors are a trio of professional musicians who bring years of performing a broad variety of musical genres to the stage like no other tenor group. One third of this trio comes from BHS in the voice of John Middleton-Cox!

As a teaser and prelude to the brilliant sounds that the Gala Benefit Concert will bring to the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center, The New England Tenors and the BHS Chorus and Select Singers will perform at the opening of Town Meeting on Monday, September 27. The meeting begins at 7:30 pm and will be shown live on BCAT.

The Burlington High School Red Devils football team and marching band will be on the road this weekend as they come up against the Arlington High School Spy Ponders. The game will be played on Saturday evening at Pierce Field, 869 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington MA.

RAYBURN MUSIC provides first fundraising opportunity of year

The Burlington High School Music Boosters Association will hold its first fundraiser this evening. Members will assist Rayburn Music, the retailer/rental agent of musical instruments for the school system music program, at the high school during Rayburn musical instrument night.

Parents and their students in the fourth and fifth grades who are interested in learning an instrument may rent or rent-to-own by attending this event. Boosters members will assist in the rentals by directing traffic, collecting forms and handing out instruments.

The Rayburn Music Instrument Night is a win-win: Rayburn's customers are thrilled that they don't have long lines in which to wait and the Boosters receive a stipend for each member that helps!

Boosters members who are interested in helping are requested to go to the cafeteria at 5:30 pm tonight...the Rayburn Musical Instrument night begins at 6:00 pm.

NOTE: The BHS Music Boosters Association will hold its first meeting of the school year tonight at 7:30 in the band room. We encourage all those present at the Rayburn fundraiser to walk down to the meeting following the event.

The BHS Music Boosters Association will hold the first general membership meeting of the 2010/2011 year on Tuesday night, September 14th, at 7:30 in the BHS Band Room.

Come hear about plans for our big fund raiser of the year, the November 6th Gala Benefit Concert featuring "The New England Tenors" and the BHS Chorus and Select Singers. Other plans for the year to be discussed include a new music scholarship and we hope you will take part in helping to institute it!

We are also looking for volunteers to bring snacks to the football games and will have sign up sheets at the meeting. If you have a conflict that evening, please contact Shirley Fong to volunteer at shirltalk@aol.com.

Burlington High School Red Devils football season begins tomorrow night with the traditional opening game rivalry against Billerica. Although it is a home game, home turf will be at Woburn High School due to construction on Varsity Field. Kickoff is 6:00 pm. See the sidebar for directions.

The Burlington High School Marching Band will be featured during the half-time show with its newest members, the class of 2014!

Band members will be treated during intermission to snacks and drinks provided by the Music Boosters.

Great news, Music Boosters friends!

The School Committee members have unanimously voted to change the name of Fogelberg Auditorium to Fogelberg Performing Arts Center!

The decision was made based on an appeal in the middle of June to Dr. Conti by one of our own Music Boosters members .

The following is the text of an article that appeared in the Wednesday, September 8 edition of the Burlington Daily Times Chronicle as reported by Mark Biagiotti.

BURLINGTON - During its recent meeting, the School Committee voted unanimously in favor of renaming Fogelberg Auditorium at Burlington High School to the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center.

School Supt. Dr. Eric Conti stated the new name would reflect the change from an auditorium to a professional performance venue that hosts plays, recitals, and concerts.

“Renaming the auditorium to the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center will help improve the marketing aspect of the facility,” said Conti, as he noted some of the improvements and upgrades that have been implemented to the auditorium over the years which include new seating, new lighting, and a new sound system.

It was noted that the facility has dressing rooms, fly space, and an orchestra pit.

The School Committee, as a whole, felt the name change is a great idea and all the members fully supported it.

Chairman Christine Monaco offered a gesture of humor when she congratulated the late Ed Fogelberg on the “upgraded” name change of his auditorium.

“If you are watching this Ed, [Fogelberg], congratulations because you just got upgraded,” said Monaco.

STUDENT AUDITIONS: IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE

The Burlington High School Drama Club will hold auditions for It's a Wonderful Life on September 14 from 6:30-9:00 pm and September 15 from 2:45-5:00 pm in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center. Performance dates are December 4 at 7:30 pm and December 5 at 2:00 pm.

Directed by Jennifer Lavin Howard of the Burlington Players, It's a Wonderful Life has been adapted from the film by Frank Capra and features 20 roles plus an ensemble playing multiple characters.

The BHS Music Boosters are excited to begin a new school year supporting the music program at Burlington High School. There are lots of things in store this year. Following is the welcome back letter that will be sent to all music parents. We hope to see you all at the first Music Boosters general meeting on September 14 in the Band Room of the high school.

Dear Parents:

Welcome! As the parent or guardian of a student in the Burlington High School Marching Band or Chorus, you are an automatic member of the BHS Music Boosters Association. We invite you to participate in any or all of the activities of the Association. By doing so, you support the education and well-being of your high school students.

Those of you who are new to the high school will be excited to see that BHS offers an outstanding music program of concerts, musicals, banquets, parades, and other performances throughout the year. The BHS Music Boosters is committed to providing support, financial and otherwise, to the BHS music students, and to this program of events. Through our fundraising efforts, we are the only Burlington High School association to provide a scholarship to all marching band seniors, including dance squad and color guard members, that are going on to higher education.

Participation in the Boosters is a great way to be included behind the scenes in events that your child cares about! Parents carry water at parades, help with instruments and equipment at football games, bake, build or paint sets for the stage performances, help with publicity, sell balloons, and much more.

We desperately need participation in our general meetings to make and vote on decisions that affect your students – decisions that range from candy sales to scholarship amounts. There are five general meetings a year, they will be held the second Tuesday of every other month. The first general meeting will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the band practice room. We encourage you to join us for this first meeting.

Enclosed you will find a copy of the BHS Music Boosters By Laws, the Music Department Schedule for school year 2010 - 2011, and directions to “away” football games and other events. Please note that due to construction on the Burlington Varsity Field, all home games will be played at Woburn High School. The attached schedule is current as of the current date and differs from the Band Schedule that was mailed over the summer. Don't Be Late For This Very Important Date: BEST Kids perform Disney's "Alice in Wonderland, Jr."

Burlington Educational Summer Theatre (BEST), a program of the Burlington Public Schools, is thrilled to return with its final production of the season, Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” The performances will take place at 2:00 and 7:00 pm on Saturday, July 24 in the Fogelberg Auditorium of Burlington High School.

Who doesn’t know the story of Alice and her madcap adventures as she follows White Rabbit into Wonderland? Join her as she experiences a host of zany characters including the DoDo Bird, the Tweedles, the Queen of Hearts, the Caterpillar and the Cheshire Cat. Described by MTI as a “fast-paced stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland,” the production “features updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as ‘I'm Late,’ ‘The Un-birthday Song’ and ‘Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.’”

A family-friendly production, the BEST Kids’ performance of “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” will feature more than 60 students from Burlington schools ranging in age from seven to thirteen, with Rachel Seeley in the lead role of Alice, along with Sydney Matai as Small Alice and Emma Saltsman as Tall Alice. Also included in principal roles are Elana Schlansky as the White Rabbit and Katherine Ellis as the Mad Hatter; playing Caterpillars are Mia Campbell, Kacey Ridley, Gabrielle Corsino, Tyler Gnerre and Ashley Blathras; Cheshire Cats are played by Amanda Wagreich, Kaitlyn Brine and Cassidy Cummings. Also in featured roles are Amanda McCombs as the Dodo Bird, Madison Carter as the Doorknob, Mikaila Gnerre as Lilly and Ivy Saltsman as the March Hare. Also, Jade Gordon plays Mathilda, Jessica Gordon plays Rose and Jordyn Nobrega plays Petunia. Playing the roles of the King and Queen of Hearts are Michael Seeley and Emily Bertolami; and, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum will be played by Rachel Czerwinski and Emily Frost.

The BEST production of “Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” has a sizable ensemble with members playing the roles of Magical Characters, Flowers, Sea Creatures, Royal Cardsmen, the Tweedle Entourage, the Tea Party Entourage and the Park Children. The members of the ensemble are: Kerry Alexander, Sara Cannalonga, Casey Damon, Annie Ellis, Sasha Festi, Marlea Gainley, Shaylinn Gainley, Mari Gedick, Elisa Gonzalez, Kailee Heffler, Jessica Poulin and Carlee Wickwire. Also included are Bridgette Sullivan, Lindsay Corbett, Scott Czerwinski, Mary Hanafin, Daniel Harrigan, Matthew Harrigan, Serina Khalifa, Shane Manfredi, Glen Middleton-Cox, Samantha Murphy, Juliana Nigro, Stephen Nigro, Nicole Noonan, Christina Raposo, Jessica Sarver, Isabella Seeley, Caitlin Shea and Claudia Webb. Additionally, Theresa Chai, Kylie DeVarney, Joseph Godin, Erin Hardy, Kelliann Keaney, Olivia LoPreste, Jillian Murray and Annalisa Petrizzi.

Burlington Educational Summer Theatre is a summer program of the Burlington Public Schools that offers a professionally produced educational theatre experience for students. The program is in its second year under the guidance of BEST Executive Director John Middleton-Cox, a highly regarded theatre professional and music educator. Joining Middleton-Cox for the production of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland Jr.” are Jeanne Coroniti (Fox Hill Elementary School’s music teacher) as Artistic and Music Director, Jamie Jaffe (Fox Hill classroom teacher) as Production Director, and Leanne Reardon (Assistant Director for Suzanne’s Dance Connection in Burlington) as Choreographer. Returning to BEST Kids this year are professional set designer Peter Waldron and award-winning costume designer Maureen Krebs.

BEST staff also includes a number of high school students and graduates, all veterans of Burlington High School productions, in roles as crew members and counselors. They are led by Kevin Parker as House Manager, Stage Manager Tori Carrabino, along with stage crew members Joseph Nosak, Jacinda Pedersen, Daryn Starkey, Nick Stewart and Sam Cote. Eva Costanza returns as a vocal coach, Eric Leva is the rehearsal accompanist, Chris LaRocque is the Sound Technician and Samantha Goober is the lighting technician. They are joined by Andrew Frost, Emily Martin, Caroline Coe, Zaven Ovian and Samantha Ellis.

A "growing" version of Audrey II gettin' a little love from Shane Ryan who plays the role of Seymour Krelbourne in "Little Shop of Horrors"

Walking onto the stage of the Fogelberg Auditorium at Burlington High School could prove to be an earthy crunchy experience at the end of June when Audrey II, a man-eating plant, takes up residence for the Burlington Educational Summer Theatre’s (BEST) production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” Performances will take place on Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26 at 7:30 pm.

“Little Shop of Horrors” is a high energy rock-and-roll spoof of ‘50s sci-fi movies. The creation of composer Alan Menken and librettist Howard Ashman (creative geniuses behind such blockbuster Disney productions as “Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin”), “Little Shop” is the story of a down and out, skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation, finding his chance at success and love with the help of a man-eating plant!

Featuring a small ensemble, the “Little Shop of Horrors” cast members are familiar faces on the Burlington High School stage. Shane Ryan plays the lead role of Seymour Krelborne and is joined by Katie Campbell as Audrey, the target of his silent affection. Chris Coe takes on the role of floral shop-owner Mr. Mushnik and is joined by Patrick Hanafin as evil dentist Orin Scrivello and Danielle Calder as Bernstein. Providing running commentary throughout the show are doo-wop rocker chicks Chiffon, Crystal and Ronette played by Jen Gregorio, Nicollette Moodie and Ariana Hall.

Stealing the show is Audrey II, who begins as a rather non-descript plant but after gaining its nourishment from human blood, grows to be well over six feet with a wingspan of over 12 feet, large enough to swallow humans in one gulp! (Audiences take note: this carnivorous species is created through the magic of puppetry.) Audrey II, the man-eating center of all the high energy action, comes to life with the voice of Zaven Ovian and puppet manipulation by Paul Neves.

Burlington Educational Summer Theatre is a summer program of the Burlington Public Schools that offers a professional educational theatre experience for students. The BHS Music Department will hold its annual Spring Awards Banquet tomorrow night. An annual event, the banquet will honor every student in the chorus and band with presentations to the students by year of service.

Mr. Middleton-Cox and Mr. Lovell will preside over the evening. The 99 Restaurant, a favorite of all music students and families for their extreme generosity and great food, will provide the meal. Desserts will be provided by student families.

It has been an unbelievable year for the students and staff of the music department. Looking back on all the activities beginning with band camp, roaring through football season, Christmas performances, Titanic, Winter/Ides of March/Spring Concerts, Mr. Lovell's 25th anniversary tribute, DisneyWorld and Great East/Six Flags, our students have not had enough time to stand in one spot for longer than five minutes!

Professional photos of the band and chorus will be available at the banquet, including those from DisneyWorld (seen above). Prices range from $5-$10.

The BHS Music Boosters would like to take the time to thank the administration for all their support, our staff for their never-ending dedication and patience, and the parents who have given so many, many hours of their time to make this year so extremely memorable for one and all.

SPRING SING, the final BHS music performance

In the final public performance of the school year, the Burlington High School Music Department will present Spring Sing, a night filled with pop and musical theatre performances, on Wednesday, June 9, at 7:30 pm in the Fogelberg Auditorium of the high school.

Spring Sing promises to have something for everyone, showcasing the singing talents of the students in the BHS music department. In addition to featuring the BHS Chorus and Select Singers, Spring Sing is the only opportunity during the year for the students to present songs of their own choice, highlighting over 35 solo and ensemble performances.

For all the vocal music students, this is a performance they have been anticipating all year. Months of studying, vocalizing and perfecting diction come to a close on this evening. Their talents will entertain, amuse and awe.

Spring Sing is open to the public, admission is free.

The BHS Marching Band will take part in Burlington’s annual Memorial Day commemoration beginning at 9 am with “Taps” on the Burlington Common. The morning performance will continue when the students take their place at Chestnut Hill Cemetery alongside town officials, Burlington veterans and honored guest speakers for the formal commemoration. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who died in service to the United States of America.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by General John A. Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. Originally known as Decoration Day it was for the Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. After World War I, it became a holiday to honor all men and women who died in service.

Memorial Day is a much-anticipated performance displaying the fine talents of the students while exhibiting their respect for those men and women who have given their lives to serve this country. We hope everyone will be present to observe the day.

It is with great excitement that Burlington Educational Summer Theatre unveils its new graphics for the BEST Teens production of "Little Shop of Horrors." The graphics will appear on all print work and advertising for the production.

Designed by Kate McMahon, secretary for the music department at Burlington High School, the artwork is an image of AUDREY II, the man-eating plant and main "character" in this spoof on '50s sci-fi movies. She drew much of it freehand, gave life to the image with colored pencil, scanned it and "posterized" it with Photoshop.

Kate holds a BS in Art from Northeastern University. In recent years she has lent her artistic talents to completing special effects painting on sets for BHS productions. She is also responsible for the graphics and layout for all printed programs for the productions and music department as well.

Thank you, Kate. You are a treasure chest of talent for the music department staff!

SINGING THE PRAISES OF VOCAL LAB

The Burlington High School Music Department will host its fourth Vocal Lab Recital tonight in two years since its introduction last year. The recital begins at 7:30 pm in the Chorus Room of BHS.

Vocal Lab, a class taught by John Middleton-Cox, is an opportunity for students to learn proper breathing and vocal technique while at the same time expanding their repertoire. Tonight’s program will include fifteen students who have prepared their performance pieces over the past semester.

Families and friends are invited to attend. The event is free of charge.

Burlington Public Schools is pleased to announce that Burlington Educational Summer Theatre (BEST), a theatre program for local students, will return this summer with two exciting musical favorites this June and July.

“Little Shop of Horrors” will be presented on Friday, June 25 at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, June 26 at 2:00 and 7:30 pm by the BEST Teens program. The story of a clumsy florist shop worker who finds his chance at success and love with the help of a man-eating plant, “Little Shop” is a high energy rock-and-roll spoof of ‘50s sci-fi movies that will have you rockin’ in your seats!

“Alice in Wonderland, Jr.,” will be presented on Saturday, July 24 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm by the BEST Kid’s program. A family classic, it will delight young and old in this lively stage adaptation with updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as “I’m Late,” “The Un-birthday Song” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.”

Burlington Educational Summer Theatre offers an educational summer theatre experience for students in the Burlington Public Schools. Under the guidance of BEST Executive Director John Middleton-Cox, the production staff for BEST Kids includes Jeanne Coroniti as Artistic and Music Director, Jamie Jaffe as Production Director and Leanne Reardon as Choreographer. Middleton-Cox will return as Artistic and Co-Music Director for BEST Teens with staff members Amanda Potts as Co-Music Director and Brad Jenson as Assistant Director and Choreographer. Returning this year are professional set designer Peter Waldron and award-winning costume designer Maureen Krebs.

BHS CHORUS ON ROAD AGAIN TO GREAT EAST

As mentioned in our previous blog entry, the Burlington High School Choruses will be travelling to Agawam Massachusetts this Friday, May 14, to participate in the Great East Festival. Departing from the school at approximately 10 am, the students along with conductor John Middleton-Cox will perform at 12:30. Following their performance and adjudication, the chorus members will hop back on their buses and head to Six Flags Amusement Park for an afternoon of fun.

Prior to their departure the BHS Chorus members will be presented with newly designed t-shirts as a gift from the Music Boosters Association. Designed by fellow music student Daryn Starkey, the t-shirts will set our students apart from the rest!

GREAT PERFORMANCES AS THE YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE

The school year is nearly done and as we roll through May there are some wonderful Music Department performances to mark on your calendars.

The Burlington High School Music Department will present the BHS Spring Concert this Thursday, May 6, at 7:30 pm in the Fogelberg Auditorium. This concert will be the final performance of the year for all the ensembles of Burlington High School. The performance will feature the BHS Concert Band and Jazz Band under the direction of Matt Lovell and the BHS Chorus and Select Chorus under the direction on John Middleton-Cox. The concert will be especially poignant for seniors who will be graduating in one month, taking with them the memories of a year filled with extraordinary performances.

On May 14 the members of the BHS Chorus will be taking their annual journey to Agawam, Massachusetts where they will participate in the Great East Festival. Although not considered to be a competition, the festival will provide an opportunity for the chorus to be adjudicated by a panel of judges and have always walked away with top honors. Following their participation in the festival is their visit to Six Flags, a day of fun for all.

On May 31, the BHS Marching Band will take part in Burlington’s annual Memorial Day commemoration beginning at 9 am with “Taps” on the Burlington Common. BHS graduation will take place at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 6. Members of the BHS Concert Band will be seated on the field, participating in the annual rite of passage with their performance of Pomp and Circumstance, the Star Spangled Banner and their salutes to graduating seniors from the band.

The vocal music students of the Music Department (and a few friends) will present Spring Sing, a showcase of solo and ensemble performances, on June 9, at 7:30 pm. The BHS Chorus will open the program, followed by an entertaining assortment of songs from a wide variety of musical styles and genres.

Finally, the Music Awards Banquet will be held on June 10 in the cafeteria of the high school. This annual event pays tribute to each and every student of the band and chorus as they complete a very full year of performances. We'll keep you posted on the details as the event nears.

All the performances will be open to the public and free of charge. More information on the Music Awards Banquet will be provided to families of the students at a later date.

BHS Marching Band at Disney World!

These are just a few of the many many photos that were taken at Disney World on April 21st when the band marched down Main Street at Disney World. There are several efforts underway to consolidate photos and videos into movies. In addition, Disney World photographers also took photos. Stay tuned for more information on photos and videos for your collection. If you have any that you would like to contribute to the upcoming consolidation efforts, both Lori Kashgegian and Vicki Kikuchi will be collecting these to compile into movies.

Epcot day of magic

"When I was marching down Main Street, I almost cried." "Thank goodness for Fast Passes" The BHS Msrching Band's day at Epcot proved to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures reaching the high 80's with not a cloud in the sky. Favorite rides at Epcot included Test Track, Mission Space, and Soarin'. These rides ran out of Fast Passes by early in the evening, as the band took full advantage of waiting in shorter lines. Many of the band students got pictures with characters at Epcot, including Mickey and Minnie and Mary Poppins. Touring the world showcase gave students the chance to try out foods from various countries, including crepes from France and Japanese food from Japan at Teppan Edo (a favorite restaurant among band-ees and chaperones). The end of the day Epcot Illuminations show was amazing with fireworks, fire, laser lights, and music. The kids were more tired today from the heat and from walking the length of the park over and over. Looking forward to Animal Kingdom and the sad band departure on Friday.

Burlington had the best band I have ever seen at Disney (quote by a [DisneyWorld] cast member) . The much-awaited march down Main Street proved to be the most exciting and fantastic experience of the week by all parents and students alike!

Disney took 104 photos of the band, downloadable for a fee. There were many parents taking photos as well. We will be considering options for photo distribution over the next week, but take a look at the disney photos, ver impressive.

The kids returned to Magic Kingdom and enjoyed the rides into the evening with beautiful weather!

Our second day in Disney World was at Hollywood Studios, where the famed "Tower of Terror" and "Rockin' Roller Coaster" took up most of the kids' time! It was a challenge to time those Fast Pass tickets just right to be sure to get on the rides with friends. Many spent the day using cellphones trying to connect with other groups of friends. We saw groups of 5 to 10 Burlington kids wandering the park, recognizable by their bright red lanyards. Highlights at Hollywood studios included the new Toy Story Mania ride, the Stunt show complete with car explosions and chases, and the classic parade. The ultimate end to any day was the Fantasmic show. Mr. Lovell was heard at the early check in telling the group that he wanted to adjust the later check in time to be sure to get into Fantasmic. So the group met at 7:00 to get in line for the 8:30 Fantasmic show, which ended up being delayed due to weather -- it was threatening thunderstorms and starting to rain. Thankfully, the weather cleared and the show began 20 minutes late, but it delivered with lights, characters, water sprays, explosions, and fireworks. The show was the highlight of the day for the students who all left the park after the show. Wearing our "I'm with the Band Shirts", we are ready for the big parade day and looking forward to it with anticipation.

Welcome to Disney World

"When I saw the Magic Kingdom castle, I started to cry!" "This place is so magical, it doesn't matter if it's raining, it's Disney World" These are just some of the many quotes from the Burlington High school band members after yesterday's dramatic entrance into the Magic Kingdom. Both flight groups arrived ahead of schedule and the mechanics of travel went "as smooth as silk", to quote our Disney Chair, Steve Parker. Weather started out in the 80s and sunny, but by 5:00, it started to rain off an on for the rest of the evening. The park was scattered with rain ponchos and umbrellas as it didn't stop us from going on Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, just a few of the park favorites. The band meet time at 8:30 in front of the castle resulted in Mr. Lovell conducting the band in their well-practiced "Ooh aah" chant while on-lookers applauded at the 100+ band and chaperone group huddled in front of the castle. They decided to leave the park before the 9:00 Spectrum Magic parade, which was a good decision because the parade was delayed due the weather. Many of the kids went back to the hotel and went in the "amazing" pool at the Port Orleans hotel. All band and chaperones are in building 5, conveniently located right near the pool and the food court. The Port Orleans French Quarter is a lovely hotel, appointed in the style of New Orleans, and the rooms are spacious with double sinks in the bath and plenty of room for all of the kids' stuff. Overall, the band can boast of a successful first day. I'll post photos soon. Next stop, Hollywood Studios for encounters with Tower of Terror and Rock 'n Roller Coaster!!!
